The collection of the museum has been built up in the course of years thanks to the donation of private deposits and collections, the purchase of both old and contemporary originals, the co-operation with the most important satirical journals all over the world as well as with associations of cartoonists and foreign museums.
The rich collection of original satirical drawings, both past and present and old lithographic prints from the museum's archives is exposed periodically during temporary exhibitions and is open to consultation by scholars and experts.
The specialised museum's library contains books, catalogues, satirical albums, material on the history of satire, as well as Italian and foreign satirical journals and periodicals. It includes the "Paolo Moretti" collection with its ca. 1000 books, satirical journals and periodicals from 1945 up to the present day. A CD-ROM on the History of Satire is in preparation, a sort of virtual museum with the help of which it will be possible to travel in time, following the historical development of satire from its origin until today; it will be also available on Internet, representing a specialised and so far unique data base in this sector: the virtual museum, indeed, will contain a vast archive of files with information on authors and satirical journals, drawings and multimedial introductions.
