The monument, originally situated inside the old Cucirini Cantoni & Coats factory, is now found on the corner of an internal alley. The work has a square marble base with dedicatory epigraph, on which stands a bronze sculpture of a soldier in uniform shaking hands with a factory worker with work clothes and tools (symbol of the alliance between the military and manufacturing worlds).
Acquacalda (Lucca)
Perché viva
scolpito nei cuori
il loro eroico sacrificio
nella gloria luminosa
della patria amata
24-V-1924
Translation: So it will live engraved in the hearts their heroic sacrifice in the luminous glory of the beloved homeland 24-v-1924
24th May 1924
The monument was originally situated in an internal garden. It was subsequently moved outside the nursing pavilion and is now found near the entrance. The monument was inaugurated on 24th May 1924 with a large ceremony. Over the years it has been object of several celebrations and official visits: comprehensibly as it was designed and made as a representation of the reconciliation between the military world (and the nation) and the world of work (and the proletariat). The attached photograph shows the monument on 31st May 2010 - last working day of the factory, that closed its doors after 120 years of production.
